Causes of ferrous sulfide and its spontaneous combustion mechanism

Ferrous sulfide is a eutectic of sulfur and iron in a high-vacuum quartz tube. The causes and spontaneous combustion mechanism of ferrous sulfide are as follows:

  1. The cause of ferrous sulfide: ferrous sulfide is a dark brown or black solid, hardly soluble in water, with a density of 4.74g/cm3 and a melting point of 1193 degrees Celsius. Sulfur in oil is roughly divided into active sulfur and inert sulfur. Active sulfur includes monomer active sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, and mercaptans. It has the characteristic of directly reacting with metal to form metal sulfide. Above 200 degrees Celsius, dry hydrogen sulfide can directly react with iron to produce ferrous sulfide. The maximum generation rate is between 360°C and 390°C, and the delay to about 450°C becomes insignificant. At 350 to 400 degrees Celsius, elemental sulfur is easily combined with iron to form ferrous sulfide.

  2. Spontaneous combustion mechanism: When heated or illuminated in the air, ferrous sulfide will react chemically. At the same time release a lot of heat. If there are other combustibles around, dense smoke will be generated, causing fire and explosion.

  3. The main points to prevent spontaneous combustion of ferrous sulfide: the existence of ferrous sulfide, contact with oxygen in the air, and a certain temperature are the three elements for the spontaneous combustion of ferrous sulfide in equipment maintenance. In order to prevent spontaneous combustion accidents of ferrous sulfide during equipment inspection, at least one of the elements needs to be removed.
